Interview:

 

Was there one specific thing that inspired you to become a writer?

For starters, I’ve always loved to read. I’m a hopeless romantic and romance is my favorite genre.

Being a middle-aged woman and a proud Baby Boomer, I was tired of reading about twenty something main characters. Nothing against them mind you, but I just longed to read stories about women my own age. I had just finished the Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy and an idea was brewing in my head. Picture this: I was at dinner with two of my best friends. Over a good bottle of wine, we were discussing the books and how there just weren’t many ‘over fifty’ romance reads out there. They actually dared me to write a book about middle-aged lovers. Never one to pass up a good a dare, I took them up on it and started putting thoughts into words and words into a document.

I’m a young at heart woman, so I decided to incorporate a rock band and younger characters in the mix to make the book appealing to all ages. And so, on Halloween night of 2012, I set out on this wonderful journey.

Out of the Box Awakening is an interesting title. Can you elaborate on that?

My main character, Olivia Petersen was uprooted from her secure comfortable life in Houston when her husband was transferred to his company’s corporate headquarters in Chicago. Not one to readily accept change, she was forced to step Out of the Box – out of her comfort zone. The Awakening came from unexpected events that occurred after the move.

Is this a series?

Yes. After I finished and self-published Out of the Box Awakening, I just knew there was more of the story to tell. My characters kept telling me “You’ve gotta keep it going!” I took them up on it and released the 2nd book in the series, Out of the Box Regifted in 2014 and am working on the 3rd and final in the series, Out of the Box Everlasting. I also wrote a little bridge novella called Toccata Obbligato~Serenading Kyra as well, which is written from the POV of a band member in the series.

How rewarding is the writing/self publishing process to you?

Probably one of the best things for me is to read a review of my book. When a reader actually takes the time to review my book and they actually get it, meaning they understand the message, it’s amazing and it just gives me, as a writer more fuel to keep going. My message, by the way is that second chances in life and love are possible and that women should learn to love themselves. You can’t be happy in life until you are comfortable in your own skin. Embrace life, embrace the body and the attributes that God gave you and realize that there is someone out there for everyone. Prince Charming DOES exist.

Do you have a tagline – a branding for your series?

I would say my books are ‘Grownup romance from the other side of 30’. As for a tag line? I’d say, ‘When Life Gives You a Second Chance, Embrace it Like There’s no Tomorrow!”

Excerpt from Out of the Box Awakening:

Ash cuts me off mid-sentence and pulls me into his arms. “Olivia please don’t make a decision like that just yet. I’ll admit, I have my selfish reasons for wanting you to stay and not go back to Texas. I care so much for you, and while I know Houston is your home and that you miss your kids, I want you to at least think about staying in Highland Park—with me. You don’t have to decide right now, but I want you to know that I’ll take care of you. Look, this is all new to me, and I just know that I haven’t felt for any woman the feelings I have for you. I’ll support whatever you decide to do and I’ll help you any way I can, but please, please don’t leave; not yet anyway.”

He has tears in his eyes and I begin to cry.

“Olivia, please don’t cry, I want you to be happy—I want to make you happy. I can make you happy.”

“Ash, you do make me happy, happier than I’ve ever been. I just don’t know what to do. What is the right thing to do? I don’t know. My mind is going in ninety different directions. If I follow my heart, it tells me that I belong here with you.”

He kisses the top of my head and in a broken voice whispers “Then follow your heart, Liv.”

 

Spotlight on Author Ashley Erin

Welcome Ashley Erin.

We are so happy you could be with us today.

 

 

Ashley has a degree in Psychology and has worked in the Human Services field for five years. She loves reading romance, new adult, paranormal and fantasy novels.

She lives in Spruce Grove, Alberta with her boyfriend, two dogs and four cats. She also has a horse she loves with all her heart. When she is not working with the horses, reading and writing, you can find her on social media.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I first began dreaming about it in high school but never believed it was possible. I have always written, but usually kept it to myself. I discovered the world of Indie’s in 2014 and decided to push myself to fulfill my dream.

 

How long does it take you to write a book?

All About Us took a year. It was my first book and I have to admit I took time off from it. The No Asshole Rule was quicker. I think it will depend on the book and how cooperative my characters are.

 

What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

I recently got laid off, but I typically work Monday to Friday during the day and then write evenings and weekends.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Hmmm, I think it would be that I don’t typically go back and read anything I’ve written until I’m completely done the first draft. I just get too caught up in editing what I’ve done if I start rereading.

How do your books get published?

I am self-published, so they are on the major online retailers.

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

Usually when I’m driving and listening to music. It could be a word or the tone of a song. I’ve had to pull over more than once to start jotting notes.

When did you write your first book and how old were you?

I started my first book in 2014, I was 28.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

I love horses and riding. I am currently helping my horse trainer and learning how to train.

What does your family think of your writing?

They have been immensely supportive. I can’t be any luckier in how amazing they have been. My sister isn’t typically into romance and she even bought a copy of my book. Everyone was encouraging and they shared my teasers and links.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

I think I was impressed at how much I can accomplish when I really set my mind to it.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I’ve written two so far. The second releases May 19, 2015. And I love them both. I can’t pick a favorite!

Do you have any suggestions to help me become a better writer? If so, what are they?

I’m so new still, I’m looking for tips! In all honesty, I strive to make sure I listen to feedback, make sure I do my characters justice and give myself credit.

 

Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?

I have a small group of readers who have been following me since before I published All About Us. They are so awesome and they just tell me how much they loved my characters and they can’t wait for my next books. It’s a surreal feeling knowing people are looking forward to something I’ve written.

 

Do you like to create books for adults?

I love it. I think reading is one of the best escapes we can take.

 

What do you think makes a good story?

I am a sucker for an HEA. I also love it when I get really attached to the characters and root for them.

 

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

I wanted to be a Veterinarian. Then I realized how much schooling was involved and decided to just enjoy my pets.

Spotlight on Author Alissa Rose

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I think I’ve always known on some level. Growing up in school I always enjoyed writing assignments especially ones that allowed us to use our imagination. Then later as an adult I was always told I had a gift to tell a story and make you feel like you were there with me. I had a pined to write one from the time I was in 8^th grade but the fear of failing kept me from it. I wasn’t until a few years ago that my husband told me that he has had enough of hearing me talk about it and that I need to just do it.

How long does it take you to write a book?

Well that kind of depends on my three kids and what the schedule looks like but leisurely about five months.

 

What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

I’m horrible about a schedule. For the most part I will get in a few pages every few days then have about one solid day about every two weeks where my characters will not shut up and I will slam out a few chapters.

 

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

When I am in my groove and writing a really intense scene I like to block everything out and close my eyes. If where I’m writing about has a smell I find myself actually breathing it in or moving it the same way the character would so I can get the description just right.

 

How do your books get published?

For now I self-publish with amazon / Kindle.

 

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

In my first book, Fun and Games, I took a lot my experience of traveling on the road with my husband and our chainsaw carving business.

 

When did you write your first book and how old were you?

My first attempt was in middle school but I was very unhappy with it so I held off until last year at the age of 31.

 

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

Travel, I love to see the world and make as many memories as I can with the time I’m given.

 

 

What does your family think of your writing?

Everyone in my family has been a blessing. They are all very supportive.

 

 

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in

 

creating your books?

There were so many along the way. That a good editor is worth the money and writing a book is the easy part. Promoting, getting reviews, book signings, giveaways, take overs and etc. I could go on for days, is the hard part. There are so many wonderful authors coming out every day it is hard work getting yourself out there and into everyone’s hands.

 

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I have one out, Fun and Games, which is part of a trilogy. The second book should be releasing this summer with a novella shortly after that.

 

Do you have any suggestions to help me become a better writer? If so, what are they?

Ask questions often. If you have the time to speak with an author that has done something that you are currently trying to do like self-publish or go to a signing don’t be afraid to ask them to help. Most are very nice and would love to help as much as they can. And if not what’s the worst that will happen they say no.

 

Do you hear from your readers much?

 

What kinds of things do they say?

Yes I have a great group of readers that love to keep in touch with me. The group may not be big yet but it is made of some really great people. Most of them say, “Where is book 2 I’m dying to read it.”

 

Do you like to create books for adults?

Yes I write in erotica.

What do you think makes a good story?

Leaving some mystery to keep the pages turning.

 

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

I never really had a set idea I always thought that when I found it I would know.
