Scotty V. Casper

Many people believe a Western writer is a rootin" tootin' cowboy. Casper is not that, but he did have a brief career riding in rodeos. All right, truth be told, it was a junior rodeo. He rode a calf back in the 50's in the junior rodeo in Oakley, Utah. He was talked into it by his cousin. He lasted two leaps before he got deposited in the dust. Then to add insult to injury the danged calf stepped on him and scoured him with manure. The people in the audience laughed themselves sick. But just because he didn't ride on the rodeo circuit doesn't mean he's not qualified to write a good Western, because he can. Beginning in the early 1980's he spent two years researching the early Western pioneers, the fur trappers. That era began around 1820 and ended around 1840 when the Europeans took to wearing silk hats rather than beaver. Then he switched over and began reading fiction, the great Western novels written by the greats like Louis L'Amour, Max Brand, and Zane Grey. He has been reading them every since, probably well over one thousand of them. He's developed a terrible habit and can't stop reading. He has a BA in English from Brigham Young University and another BA in journalism from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. He has been married for 48 years and he dragged his wife to Alaska in '69 where they lived for 42 years. He loves the wild country like that found in Alaska and in the lower-48's Western states. He once got lost in the Alaska wilderness up near the Canadian border in the Forty-Mile country wondering around for three days and nights. But that's a story for another time. You need to read Murder in Mushroom Valley. We think you will like it.
